Shane Hoisington
Shane Hoisington is a multi-media artist out of Pahoa, Hawaii (originally from New Hampshire) specializing in Collage and Sashiko. (Sashiko is traditional Japanese embroidery used for decorative or functional reinforcement of clothing/cloth.) Along with various art forms Shane enjoys reading, skateboarding and spending time outdoors. Shane is a substitute teacher and teacher assistant at Hawaii Academy or Arts and Science Charter school as well as the skateboard instructor for their after school club. In his spare time Shane volunteers his help at Wailoa Art Center in Hilo.
Shane has a background working in education, primarily elementary, where he is able to inspire children with his creativity. He just taught Sashiko to over 40 keiki in a three week summer camp program offered by the Arts and Science Center! While motivated by the never-ending waste created by the fast fashion industry, Shane draws a lot of his inspiration for his sashiko stitching from traditional Japanese designs depicting nature and geometric elements of our surroundings.
Shane has had his Collage artworks featured in multiple Art Galleries, the most recent being Wailoa Art Center where he was presented with an honorable mention award. This coming November there will be a Pop-Up art show in Hilo where Shane will have both collage and Sashiko artworks on display. Shane is actively preparing clothing with Sashiko mendings and embellishments to have for sale at Markets on the East side of the island and plans to have Sashiko Lessons also available to adults in the very near future.
