The EHCC/Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art is very pleased to renew a long-time collaboration with Hale Nauā III, Society of Maoli Arts with the April exhibition of "Ho`i Hou I ka Mole: Return to the Source" which is scheduled to run from Friday, April 4th through Wednesday, April 30, 2014. This exhibit is intended by the Society to help define the Maole culture's many Elementals - those nature-based anthropomorphic "deities" that continue to mystify and confuse not only the general public, but the native populace as well.

The  original Hale Nauā (also known as Ualo Malie (Malo)) was a secret royal society established on September 24, 1886 by King Kalākaua. The purpose of the society, according to its constitution was "the revival of Ancient Sciences of Hawaii in combination with the promotion and advancement of Modern Sciences."

The  Hale Nauā III, Society of Maoli Arts, is a modern offshoot of this once secret royal society, and is an indigenous collective founded by Living Treasure and Master Artist Rocky Ka`iouliokahihikolo `Ehu Jensen and author Lucia Tarallo in 1976. Since the impetus of Hale  Nauā and EHCC/HMOCA's philosophy is similar; "to bring art into the community and the community into the arts," Ho'i Hou I ka Mole: Return to the Source" intends to not only educate, but embrace the community and encourage participation and support . Along with the exhibition, the Society will be offering a series of lectures and workshops defining the many components displayed in the exhibition, times and dates to be posted later. Be sure to check back for more information!
