YAS Mixed Plate is a unique approach to Spring Break. We’re changing up our usual Art Camp and allowing students to customize their art experience for the week. By signing up for all of the classes, students can have a full art camp OR pick and choose which classes they want to participate in. Take just one class or a few, it’s up to you!

YAS Refund Policy
If a student is unable to attend, a full refund will be issued if cancellation is prior to the registration deadline; if after the registration deadline but prior to the start of class a 50% refund will be issued; and no refund will be issued after the first day of class.

Class Description
In this class students will learn a variety of colored pencil techniques including basics like blending, layering, and creating texture. We will also explore more adventurous techniques such as, drawing on alternative surfaces and mixed media applications.
Note: Recommended for students with prior drawing experience, but not required.
Bio:Kellie Miyazu is a graduate of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, with a BA in Art. She attended California College of the Arts in the Bay Area for part of her education. Sewing Basics

Class Description
Create fun projects while learning practical hands-on sewing techniques that cover both, hand and machine sewing. Students will create a different project per day and gradually progress to more challenging skills over the course of the week.
Bio:Renata has been teaching animation and digital art since mid-2000 after relocating to the US from Poland, where she earned her master’s degree in Animation and Graphic Design. Over the years, she worked on a variety of digital media productions. Learn More -
Charcoal Drawing

Class Description:
Challenge your way of seeing through observation. Students strengthen their understanding of line, concepts of light and shadow, and proportions for the human face. Fine tune your mark making with charcoal.
Students should bring their own sketchbook.
Bio:Ash Huang (she/her) is a ceramic artist from O'ahu experimenting with sound and film. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture (focused in ceramics) from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and a Masters of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art & Design in Vancouver, Canada. Cool Crochet

Class Description
The three-day session will cover fundamental crochet techniques, guiding students in crafting charming whale coasters and petite pouches. Participants will have the opportunity to enhance their skills by creating a delightful crocheted animal.
Bio:A sophomore at Hilo High School, Lia Kuo has dedicated five years to practicing the art of crochet and has created and sold various crocheted animals to friends and family. In Cool Crochet, Lia is hoping to kindle inspiration in her students, encouraging them to embrace the joy of crochet as a recreational pursuit. Learn More -

Class Description
The workshops will introduce the participants to fibers and pigments/dyes found in the
ʻāina around us to use for making art. Students will choose individual projects for each day, that can include a mixture of:
Painting with pigments made from Hawaii plants and flowers on handmade
paper or large Arches printing paper
Monoprints using stamps, leaves, and rocks; Flower printing and using dried
flowers to create mobiles or small books
Cyanotype (blue print) (depending on sunlight)
Bio:Mary Milelzcik has a B.A. degree from Sonoma State University’s School of Expressive Arts, a radical two-year upper division interdisciplinary experimental program where you worked with a mentor, and chose your own path in upper-division. Printmaking and papermaking were her focus. This transformative experience set the path for an interesting career as a mixed media artist and photographer; as the Curator at Highways Performance Space and Gallery in Santa Monica CA for ten years; and as an artist and instructor of papermaking, mixed media encaustic art, and printmaking. Box Weaving

Class Description
Weave an Easter basket on a box! Participants will use inexpensive, readily available materials to weave an Easter basket on a box loom. We will build a simple loom using a cardboard box to shape and support the weaving. Plain and twill weave structures will be demonstrated and can be adorned with color and weave, tapestry inlay, and/or decorative edging. Handles for the baskets will be made using an electric drill.
Bio:Jill Cohen has been a fiber artist for over 50 years in an array of disciplines including knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting and weaving. A ten-year member of the Hawai’i Handweavers’ Hui, she served as thegrant writer for the Hui for six years. Learn More
