Poetry Reading by Kenith Simmons
Please join us for a poetry reading by Big Island poet, Kenith Simmons.
For Simmons, poetry – hers and those of the poets she loves – brings together beauty and wisdom and connection. “The best poetry has always seemed like that to me. My own best poems seem to come to me from a source outside of myself when I’m in a particularly receptive state of mind. At incredibly lucky moments, the seeds of a poem seem to stream through me from the natural world or other powerful sources, such as the practices and language of Judaism and Buddhism. It’s my job to open to the connection, to take in its wisdom, and then to shape the experience in the best words I can find.”
Simmons will be reading from her book Balancing Act, much of which arises from her connection to the natural world and to the practices and language of Judaism and Buddhism.
She is Professor of English, Emerita, UH Hilo, where she taught literature and writing from 1979–2014.
