The daring new exhibition at the East Hawai'i Cultural Center is designed to spur audiences to action while pushing the boundaries of what constitutes art. The exhibition, created in collaboration with the Hawai'i Wildlife Fund, features heaps of plastic debris collected from Kamilo Beach along with tattered old fishing nets, deposited unadorned throughout the EHCC gallery.
The waste, which includes old toothbrushes, discarded children’s toys, broken straws and unidentifiable chunks of plastic, was collected by HWF between July and September of this year. This blunt, visceral show is designed to force viewers to confront the fact that today’s plastic waste is tomorrow’s environmental disaster.
Multi-media efforts accompany the exhibition, beginning with a continuous showing of “Albatross,” an award-winning film by artist Chris Jordan about birds on Midway Island in the Pacific whose bodies are filled with ocean plastic. Photography by artists Eric Edwards and Laurel Schultz will also be on display.
Starting Saturday, October 2nd from 10am-2pm.

The EHCC will be adhering to the following gallery Policies and Procedures at this time:
- All visitors are required to wear a face mask to enter the gallery as recommended by the CDC and following County and State of Hawaiʻi regulations.
- Maximum of 10 people (including EHCC team members) allowed in the gallery space at all times.
- Maintain a social distance of six feet between you and others as much as possible.
- We encourage “no-contact” forms of communication like waving Hello, thumbs up/down, and air hugs; please avoid unnecessary physical contact.
