EHCC x Kalākaua Park Spring Break Keiki Workshops

As part of an effort to create a collaborative community installation in Kalākaua Park celebrating National Youth Art Month, EHCC is offering in-person workshops the week of March 15th (DOE Spring Break). These workshops are designed to give keiki and teens the opportunity to contribute to the Park project while exploring different media. The goal is to teach students the importance of collaborative and creative approaches to connecting with others when it’s necessary to be physically apart.They’ll also learn techniques from local artists. Students will create flags that will be displayed in Kalākaua Park during April, in addition to making items to take home with them.

Classes:

• Due to social distancing guidelines SPACES ARE LIMITED.

• Face masks must be worn at all times while on EHCC property. 

• Distances of at least 6ft. will be maintained amongst students and adults at all times during classes.

• There is no limit to the number of classes a student can sign up for.

Plant Dyes with Avalon Paradea 

Did you know you can make dye from plants? In this hands-on workshop, keiki will learn about the magic of dyeing using local, ethically sourced plant materials. We will have fun painting on flags and other provided materials. Please feel free to bring other items to dye as well -- and remember to wear something you won't mind getting messy!

Fabric Collage with Monique Ortiz 

This is one way to upcycle and express yourself! Just like paper collage, we will be using a mix of fabric scraps to create our own abstract picture using different colors and shapes, adhering them onto fabric for the flag project, as well as making mini patches to take home.

Tuesday, March 16

• 9:00 AM-10:00 AM, Ages 7-10 (CLASS FULL)

• 10:30 AM-11:30 AM, Ages 11-14

Multi Color Dyes and Shibori with Darcy Gray

Express your creative side in color and pattern.  Students will make flags with bright multi-color fabric dyes, and /or make a unique pattern using the wrapping or folding technique of the Shibori tradition using indigo dye. Both types of dye will be available for you to experience. Students will also be taught by Kim Springer & Yvonne Verburgt.

Please note: Multi color Dyes and Shibori are separate classes. Students may sign up  for both or each individual class.

Wednesday, March 17

Class 1: Multi Color Dyes

• 10:00 AM-11:30 AM, Ages 11 & up  

Class 2: Shibori 

• 12:00 Noon-1:30 PM, Ages 11 & up

Basic Stamping and Stenciling with Dena Nakahashi 

This class will feature the exploration of form and patterns. Students will learn simple stamping and stenciling techniques. They will learn to make their own stencils and stamps from scratch and create unique patterns and designs.

Thursday, March 18

• 10:00 AM-11:00 AM, Ages 8-11 (CLASS FULL)

• 11:30 AM-12:30 PM, Ages 12-15 

• 1:00 PM-2:00 PM, Ages 8-11

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

• Registration Deadline: Saturday, March 13, by 4:00 PM

• All supplies will be provided. For Plant Dyes, Multi Color, and Shibori, students are welcome to bring their own items to dye (tshirts, bandanas, etc… Cotton fabric is recommended for best results)  

• Hand sanitizer will be provided

• Due to social distancing guidelines, parents will not be allowed to sit in on classes. 

• If you or your child have, or have been in contact with anyone who has, cold/flu-like symptoms, or are feeling unwell in any way, PLEASE STAY HOME. We will issue a refund if your child is unable to attend class as a result of any health-related issues.  

• East Hawai‘i Cultural Center is a non-profit organization. We encourage all program participants to sign up for an EHCC membership. Your membership helps to support our programs like YAS to continue to provide art opportunities for the community. The EHCC Membership form can be found online by clicking the ‘join us’ tab at the top of the homepage/ It is also available in the office or main gallery. Membership purchased at the time of registration is non-refundable. Membership will remain valid for one calendar year.
