Youth Arts Series: Fall Break 2019 Halloween Camp

Program Description:

The Fall Break session of the Youth Arts Series is presented In Partnership with the UH Hilo Center for Community Engagement (CCE). YAS: Fall Break 2019 will feature a Halloween theme. Students will participate in 4 classes each day throughout the week, all fitting our holiday theme. Through our fun and creative classes, students will learn a variety of art-based processes and techniques including mask making, DIY decorations, monster sculpture, and dance. 

Simultaneously, members of the Hilo and Waiakea High School Art Clubs will be collaborating with local artist advisors and UH Hilo Faculty members to create a haunted house in EHCC’s Annex Building. The second annual YAS Haunted House will open to the public at the conclusion of the program.

Daily Schedule for YAS: Fall Break 

7:30-7:55 drop off period

8:00-9:30 AM- Monster Making

15 minute break

9:45-11:15- Mask Making 

Lunch- 30 minutes

11:45-12:30- Mixed Media 

10 minute break

12:40-1:40- Dance

1:40-2:00- Afternoon Activity*

*We will end each day with a fun group activity. Activities will include, pumpkin decorating, story time, Halloween themed games and more!

 

Lunch & Snack Time:

There will be a mid-morning snack break, and a slightly longer break for lunch. YAS will provide a healthy snack option each day during the mid-morning break (please be sure to complete the allergy section on page 6). Students will need to bring their own packed lunch from home. YAS is not able to provide lunch meals for the students.

Refund Policy:

Classes may be canceled if minimum enrollment is not met, in the event of which the enrollment fee will be refunded. Membership purchased at the time of registration is non-refundable. Membership will remain valid for one calendar year. 

Refunds requested after September 24 will receive 50% of their enrollment fee back. After October 1, the enrollment fee is non-refundable. 

EHCC is a non-profit organization, all of the money from enrollment fees goes directly into the program to provide supplies and other resources necessary to provide the best experience possible for all of the students.

Instructors

  • Monster Making (sculpture)

    We will design, sculpt, and paint miniature monstrous creatures. Students will be encouraged to create narratives about their monsters' personalities or any other aspect of their existence.

    Bio:
    Bella Freedman is a recent graduate of the University of Hawaii where she studied philosophy and received accolades for her writing. A third-generation ceramicist, she enjoys throwing on the wheel and sculpting very small women. Learn More
  • Mixed Media Decorations

    Students will create a variety of Halloween themed decorative art. They will learn DIY techniques that can be applied to decorations for a variety of holidays. We will use recycled materials and cover a range of basic drawing and painting techniques.

    Bio:
    Kellie Miyazu is a graduate of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, with a BA in Art. She attended California College of the Arts in the Bay Area for part of her education.   • Mask Making

    In this exciting workshop, kids will create and paint their own unique Halloween mask through demonstration and hands on learning. Students will design and create masks using cardstock, foam, plaster bandages,  or other materials as a base for the mask.

    Bio:
    Mary Milelzcik has a B.A. degree from Sonoma State University’s School of Expressive Arts, a radical two-year upper division interdisciplinary experimental program where you worked with a mentor, and chose your own path in upper-division. Printmaking and papermaking were her focus. This transformative experience set the path for an interesting career as a mixed media artist and photographer; as the Curator at Highways Performance Space and Gallery in Santa Monica CA for ten years; and as an artist and instructor of papermaking, mixed media encaustic art, and printmaking.  Learn More
  • Dance

    In their 4th class of the day, students will be movin’ and groovin to a Halloween classic. Class will begin with warm-up exercises followed by unique choreography to the song, ‘I Put A Spell On You’ from the movie Hocus Pocus. By the end of the week students will learn the entire dance to the song.

    Bio:
    My name is Megan Kimata and I am a senior at Waiakea High School. I’ve been dancing at Island Dance Academy, under the direction of Suen Hughes, since I was 4- years old. I take dance classes which include classical ballet, tap and jazz. I also teach two jazz classes and demonstrate ballet moves for Ms. Suen in her classes. I’ve been in 20 major dance productions put on by Island Dance Academy. My first major solo was “Fritz” in the Nutcracker and most recently as the “Fairy Godmother” in Cinderella. I will be the “Sugarplum Fairy” in the Nutcracker performance in December of this year. Learn More
