EHCC announces publication of “I Luna Loa (On the Rise),” our Annual Report for FY2019. This report, which covers EHCC operations from July 2018 to June 2019, showcases our gallery exhibits, highlights the Youth Art Series, reviews the tremendous number of varied events we hosted at our stage, Kahua ‘Elua, and more. The Hawaii Craftsman 47th Annual Statewide Juried Exhibition is Oct 10-Nov. 1 at the Honolulu Museum of Art School. Artists from all islands can enter traditional or non-traditional, functional or non-functional craft with a fresh approach in categories of clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood or mixed media. $2500 in cash prizes.

The East Hawaii Cultural Center has been at the beating heart of our community culture on the Big Island for four decades. Run largely by volunteers, under the leadership of whoever had time and passion, the Center has offered a venue for a host of cultural groups, artists, theater and music ensembles, and workshops. When the current Board Chairman asked me to take over running the venue a month ago, I was excited and daunted.
Over the two and a half years I’ve been Board Chair of the East Hawaii Cultural Center, people from the community have occasionally commended me for managing this huge, complex, and overwhelming pursuit. Yet I’m responsible for none of the unique beauty and magic emerging from EHCC during this time.
Here is a short list of the things I definitely do not do:
