Orchid Isle Orchestra’s Double Rainbow

Sunday, June 2, 2019 - 4:00pm to 6:00pm

Orchid Isle Orchestra’s Double Rainbow

Orchid Isle Orchestra presents a “Double Rainbow” concert on Sunday, June 2, 4 p.m. at the East Hawaii Cultural Center.

OIO will create a Double Rainbow of music with two Rainbow songs, two Serenades, and two movements from Mozart’s Quartet No. 8. OIO bids farewell to two graduating Hilo High School students, Ina Klasner and Elizabeth Young. Both college-bound seniors will perform familiar solos with OIO accompaniment. OIO’s principal cellist Ina Klasner will play Schubert’s Serenade. OIO violinist and singer Elizabeth Young will sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

The other “rainbow” piece is a lush arrangement of I’m Always Chasing Rainbows. One of the Mozart movements is a fugue, where the melody runs from section to section of the orchestra. English composer Edward Elgar wrote some of his favorite music in Serenade for Strings. OIO will play the Serenade’s first movement.

Younger students will join OIO in playing a compilation piece, A (Very) Short History of Music. It’s a whirlwind tour through time -- about three minutes of music, starting with Gregorian chant and ending with Stravinsky.

Also featured are returning OIO alumnus and violinist Alden Young and guest musicians Kanako Okita on piano, and Kelly Stuart on cello.

The OIO concert opens with music by Bach, Brahms, a fiddling tune, chamber music and more. Cathy Young and Walter Greenwood conduct and play.

The concert is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome and will benefit Orchid Isle Orchestra, East Hawaii Cultural Center, and more string music education. For additional information, call Cathy Young at 982-9307.
