Making A Hand-Made Book Workshop with Minny Lee

In this two (2) day workshop, students will learn how to make various types of books: basic instant, accordion fold, pocket accordion, self-hinged accordion with a cover, single signature chapbook using a three-hole pamphlet stitch and a five- hole pamphlet stitch. Asian bookbinding methods, such as stab binding and tortoise-shell binding will also be taught. No previous bookmaking experience is required. Photographers, printmakers, illustrators, graphic designers, writers and anyone interested in creating a softcover book are welcome.
Artist Bio
Minny Lee is a multimedia artist who employs photography, audio, video, artist’s
book and site-specific installation work. Her hand-made books have been exhibited and sold worldwide at such venues as the New York Art Book Fair, L.A. Art Book Fair, Codex Book Fair, Camera Club of New York, Arles Photo Festival in France, Pulp Gallery in Canada, Datz Museum of Art and Ryugaheon Gallery in South Korea. Her artist’s book, Encounters, is in the collection of the Stanford University Library, the Library of the International Center of Photography and numerous private collections. Lee obtained a Master of Arts in Art History from the City College of New York and a Master of Fine Arts in Advanced Photographic Studies from ICP-Bard. Lee is a faculty member at the Honolulu, Museum of Art School and at the International Center of Photography (NY), teaching bookmaking classes. She is based in Honolulu, Hawaii. 
Schedule of the Workshop
  • Saturday, June 23
10am – 12:30pm: bookmaking basics (paper grain, folding, cutting, making simple zines, exploring pamphlet stitch)
12:30-1:30 lunch
1:30pm – 4pm: accordion binding (pocket accordion, accordion book with a cover)
  • Sunday, June 24
10am – 12:30pm: Asian bookbinding (stab binding and tortoise-shell binding)
12:30-1:30 lunch
1:30pm – 4pm: continue making Asian bookbinding, explore more options with pamphlet stitch (time permitting)
