Our inaugural exhibition, in response to the Corona virus pandemic, has the theme: Sheltering in Paradise. Here is a FAQ sheet on how you can participate:

Who can participate?

Anyone who lives in the State of Hawai'i.

Is there an entry fee?

No, it is free to submit your photos.

Is there a limit to how many photos I can submit?

No, you may submit as many as you like.

What kind of photos are you looking for?

Almost any photo will be considered as long as it expresses something about what it means to “shelter in place” in Hawai’i. Preference will be given to photos that illustrate Hawaii’s unique cultures, history, and/or environment. Photos should be suitable for viewing by people of all ages.

I’d like to submit but I don’t want to splash my real name on the internet!

You may submit photos for exhibition with your real name, or if you prefer, you can adopt a username to preserve your anonymity.

Are there prizes for the best photo?

No, for now the only reward is the opportunity to share your creativity with others. But we hope this is the beginning of a permanent new initiative, with themes and ideas yet to be imagined, so who knows what we’ll be able to do in the future! Meanwhile, we’ll select the best photos for inclusion in the Curator’s Corner, a special album for the work that meets high standards of photographic excellence.

How do I submit?

Email your photos to: [email protected] and include the name you would like to use for the photo credit. As an optional but recommended step, you may include a brief statement (max 400 characters) explaining the photo.

Do I retain rights to the photos I submit?

All photos will be published on line under the terms of Creative Commons (https://creativecommons.org), meaning that they may be legally downloaded and re-used at no charge as long as proper credit is given to the photographer. If the terms of Creative Commons (are not acceptable to you, you should not submit your photographs for consideration.

Will I be notified if my photo is accepted?

Yes, we will advise everyone whose photos have been included that we have uploaded them.

Is there a deadline for submitting photos?

There is no deadline, but you should consult this information from time to time for updates. As circumstances dictate, we may end the “Sheltering in Paradise” exhibition and launch a new theme. We hope to collaborate with Big Island photography lovers for a long time to come!

I still have a question, how can I find out more?

If your questions are not answered by this FAQ sheet, email them to [email protected]. We’ll do our best to respond promptly!
