The Global Metaphysics of Abstract Painters/Performers

Program type:
Dates:
Friday, February 2, 2018 - 6:00pm to Friday, February 23, 2018 - 4:00pm
The Global Metaphysics of Abstract Painters/Performers: From February 2 - 23, 2018, the University of Hawai’i at Hilo in conjunction with the East Hawai’i Cultural Art Center will exhibit six African American artists, five visual and one performing, for Black History Month. The artists: Nanette Carter, Gregory Coates, Sherman Fleming, Jacquelyn Flowers, and Lamerol Gatewood.

The curators, Michael Marshall, Fine Art Department Chair, University of Hawai’i at Hilo, and Lamerol Gatewood, New York based abstract artist, are working collaboratively to bring a greater cultural awareness to the vast talent and contributions of African American abstract painters. This exhibit will challenge the prevailing thought that abstractions are limited to white artists and demonstrate the significant contributions that African Americans have made to post modernism. The exhibition will showcase a comprehensive array of paintings and performance art from internationally acclaimed artists.

The Global Metaphysics of Abstract Painters/Performers will demonstrate a breath of artistic styles and elevate work that has been historically diminished based on race. The exhibition will argue that African American artists contribute significantly to post modernism in a vital way and that abstract art is not defined by race.

*Due to shipping delay- Jacquelyn Flowers' work did not make it in time, please check again as we hope to have her work displayed in another exhibition later in the year!*
